What are cable cranes.
Transporting pipelines and the required machinery in difficult terrain often pose challenges.
Cable cranes provide the solution when pipelines need to be built in demanding areas. Pipes, construction equipment and –material can be hauled easily over inaccessible territory, pending in mid-air and placed directly in the designated position. Thanks to their capacities mobile ropeways can perform the different/varying requirements of each phase of a pipeline construction.
Cable cranes are quickly available solutions, consisting of several directly available modules, and can be deployed promptly after an terrain analysis, the planning and its installation.
A cable crane is comparable to a material-ropeway, transporting loads pending in mid-air. It consists of track ropes, a haul rope, support towers, crane units, a haul winch and tower/skyline anchors. The crane unit is winched up and down the skyline by the haul rope and is able to lift and lower material at any point of the track. Furthermore, it disposes of two independent lifting units which are remotely controlled. This enables the positioning of the pipe in the exactly suitable inclination and to fix it for the welding while hanging on the crane.
A cable crane system is a temporary installation and is disassembled once the construction of the pipeline and the re-instatement work is finished. The only thing that remains is a narrow ROW for the pipeline – of approx. 6-8 m – which will be restored over time.
Direct routes, narrow ROW and horizontal bends
When using cable crane systems of LCS, direct routes can be chosen by assembling the ropeway-system exactly above the defined route of the pipeline. Steep traces and rocky ground can be overcome easily, while at the same time a narrow ROW can be assured. Along tracks of over 3.000m heavy weights exceeding 20 tons can be loaded and unloaded with the cable crane at any point, thereby guaranteeing a precise positioning of pipes.
Due to their flexibility as well as professional planning and design, cable cranes adapt perfectly to the environment and can follow even curves of the ROW by using horizontal bend systems. Owing to the application of highly-technological and high-qualitative machinery and material for a crane-system, it remains unaffected by climatic conditions. Therefore the working period can be extended significantly (operating in winter or during rainy season in the tropics).

Construct pipelines with cable cranes
Cable cranes from LCS are particularly developed for the pipeline erection and are suitable for all construction phases of a pipeline in tough terrain.
Transport of pipes
Pipes are transported along the track of the cable crane by lifting them up with the crane-unit using chocker belts. Once arrived at the designated point along the track, the pipe is lowered.
Fitting of the pipe
When lowering the pipe, the operator controls the horizontal and vertical direction of the pipe. By using the two independently controlled lowering systems the precise position of the pipe can be achieved. Once the pipe is in the correct placement it can be prepared for the welding.
Fixing & Welding
When the pipe is in the correct position it is hold steadily by the cable crane and will be fixed in a welding clamp, that maintains it in the correct welding position. Once it is fixed in the clamp, the pipe is welded as in flat terrain.
Sandblasting & Coating
Once the pipes are welded, a special platform is transported with the crane system above the welding position. Sandblasting and coating are performed from this platform, hanging above the pipe.
Sandbags, used for sandbag barriers or as padding material are transported and unloaded in steep areas easily with cable cranes. They are hauled in a basket or a half pipe to unload them automatically at the desired position.
In case there is no padding material beside the trench, padding is easily completed help of the cable crane. The half pipe or bucket is filled up on the loading station with a truck or excavator. Aterwards, the cable crane conveys the bucket to the required place where the operator unloads the system by using the two separate lifting systems.
